<image:title>Surgical Care - Surgical Services</image:title>
<image:caption>The Best Surgical Care for Your Pet Surgical procedures are often a necessary part of your pet’s general health care plan. When your pet needs surgery, the experienced veterinary staff at Carolina Place Animal Hospital have a surgical suite equipped with state-of-the-art surgical equipment and offer a wide variety of surgical services for your pet. Our experienced, professional staff will treat your pet with the utmost care and compassion. Dr. Chappell specializes in orthopedic surgery and we accept referrals from other veterinary offices. If your pet needs specialized surgery, such as orthopedic surgery, please contact our office to schedule a consultation. Pre-Surgical Care Each pet is carefully screened prior to surgery and anesthetic drugs are selected based on your pet’s age, breed and health status. We strongly recommend that every patient have pre-anesthetic blood tests to evaluate internal organ function and ensure that the pet is a good candidate for anesthesia. Prior to surgery, we will discuss with you the recommended surgical procedure and explain why we believe a particular procedure is necessary, what the surgery entails, and expected recovery times. We also provide information on proper postoperative care and answer any questions you may have so that you feel comfortable that you are making the right choice for your pet. Itemized estimates of the cost for the procedure can be prepared and discussed prior to the operation. Surgeries performed at our hospital include but are not limited to: Orthopedic Surgery Spay/ Neuter Growth removal or tumor biopsy Laceration repair Oral/periodontal surgery Emergency surgery (e.g. wound repair and others as needed) Soft Palate Correction – For elongation of the soft palate Nasal Nares- Resection for nasal stenosis Laser Surgery – For soft tissue surgeries Emergency Abdominal Surgery Gastric & Intestinal foreign object removal Hepatic Lobectomy Gastric Dilatation of Volvulus (GDV-Correction) Gallbladder Removal Splenectomy Hernia Repair Cystotomy Thoracic Surgery Ocular Surgery Ligament and Tendon Reconstruction Hip Dysplasia Repair (unavailable for cats) During Surgery: We have standard protocols in place to make anesthesia and surgery safer for our patients. Patients are closely monitored under anesthesia by an experienced veterinary surgical assistant taking vital signs on a regular basis and utilizing digital monitoring systems throughout every procedure. Our surgery table is heated to help patients maintain an ideal body temperature and additional safe warming devices are used following procedures to enable faster recovery from anesthesia and ensure greater comfort. A comprehensive pain management plan is developed for every patient to keep them as comfortable as possible. Our Commitment to You Communication throughout the day of surgery is important to us. We will be sure that we have the best contact information when you drop off your dog or cat and will keep you fully informed about your pet’s surgery, progress and recovery. Postoperative Care Your pet will be closely monitored in our recovery area until they are stable enough to send home. We will stay in contact with you throughout your pet’s hospital stay, and we will provide you with detailed information on how to properly care for your pet at home after surgery. We are happy to answer any questions or concerns that may arise once you get your pet home.</image:caption>

<image:title>Nutrition - Nutrition & Weight Management</image:title>
<image:caption>Understanding Pet Nutrition Pet nutrition is commonly the source of obesity, allergies, and other internal issues with pets. The veterinary team at Carolina Place Animal Hospital have extensively researched pet nutrition and are eager to share their knowledge to ensure your pet lives a quality life through proper nutrition. Are you feeding your pet the right food? Have you ever taken an inventory of the foods you consume as a human, only to find that you’re overdoing it on carbs, proteins or fat? With all the misleading marketing in the pet food industry, it’s important to get your information from a reliable source. All pets are different and what’s good for one is not necessarily good for the other. You need the guidance of those in the know…not a company’s marketing message. Our team of experts can translate what your pet’s food label means to your pet and what steps need to be taken to ensure they’re receiving the proper nutrition for a long, happy life. The importance of your pet’s nutritional needs. The marketing of “healthy” pet food is just what it is…marketing. For example: With all the hype about grain-free and boutique foods; the ingredients used to substitute grains, while they sound healthy (such as lentils, peas, legumes, potatoes, etc.), they contain low levels of taurine. On July 19, 2018, the U.S. FDA issued an alert regarding grain-free diets and a possible link to dilated cardiomyopathy (a decreased ability to pump blood); often resulting in congestive heart failure. The correlation of peas, lentils, chickpeas, beans, and potatoes is the focus of the investigation and if your pet is currently on a grain-free diet, the FDA urges pet owners to consult their veterinarian. Certainly valuable information to know, but you won’t hear/see that in the marketing of grain-free products. “Oh, it’s just a couple pounds.” Here’s a little perspective for you to consider: Each excess pound on a cat is equal to 15 pounds on certain humans; two extra pounds on a dog is equal to 10 pounds on certain humans. We all know what this does to our overall health. As your pet gains weight, they slow down, unable to jump up on a favorite couch, no longer want to go for walks, etc. Then the internal symptoms begin to present themselves, albeit the internal damage has been happening for a while…you’re just now being made aware of it. Now you’re going to the vet more often for issues such as diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, arthritis, etc. Not to mention the medications they will have to be on the rest of their lives because someone said, “Oh, it’s just a couple pounds”. You are the sole voice for your pet’s health; let Carolina Place Animal Hospital provide the guidance you need to extend your pet’s life comfortably, happy, and healthy. Ongoing Maintenance As your pet ages, his or her nutritional and weight control needs will inevitably change. In order for us to continue achieving the desired results, we must make sure that our approach also evolves. At certain life stages, such as the transition from youth into adulthood, we’ll evaluate our plan and make any necessary adjustments. This will improve the chances of your companion staying in tip-top shape throughout his or her entire life. Give the team at Carolina Place Animal Hospital a call today to get started. We can design a customized diet and exercise plan that will bring out the very best in your animal friend.</image:caption>

<image:title>Laboratory Services - Diagnostic Tests</image:title>
<image:caption>When your pet becomes suddenly ill or in event of an emergency, timely diagnostic test results are extremely important to help your veterinarian determine the best treatment plan. We have state-of-the-art in-hospital laboratory equipment capable of yielding lab results within minutes. Baseline laboratory testing for your sick pet may include: Blood chemistry tests: these tests assess liver function, kidney function, blood sugar, blood proteins, calcium and phosphorus levels, and pancreatic function. Electrolyte tests: Sodium, potassium and chloride levels may be abnormal when your pet is dehydrated or having fluid losses through vomiting or diarrhea. Intravenous fluids and/or supplementation may be indicated when electrolytes are severely deranged. SNAP tests: point-of-care “snap” tests are available for certain infectious diseases such as Feline Leukemia and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus. Coagulation tests: these tests detect deficiency in clotting disorders, which can be present in cases of certain kinds of rodenticide poisoning and in severe liver disease/failure Microscopy: microscopic evaluation of bodily fluids including blood, urine; samples of skin and ear secretions, and needle biopsies of swellings or tumors can be performed in-clinic to assist in the diagnosis of systemic diseases, urinary disorders, skin and ear diseases, and differentiation of benign vs. cancerous tumors. Fecal: Fecal tests are microscopic examinations of your pet's feces. These help vets to identify and treat infections that may otherwise be difficult to detect. Fecal exams are done right here in our office. Our veterinary team will help explain which tests are most important for your pet. It is very important to us to include you in the decision-making process for your pet, so please don’t hesitate to ask a question if you need clarification.</image:caption>

<image:title>Diagnostic Imaging - Pet Radiography (X-Rays)</image:title>
<image:caption>Sometimes, it’s necessary to use medical imaging, like x-rays, to accurately diagnose our pet patients. X-rays help our veterinarians determine exactly what’s bothering your pet in order to provide safe and effective treatment.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5fd0f4ea12ae897db0091317/1618247643707-TBRFMEIN3QQNI8KXM9M6/EH1_7703+%281%29.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Diagnostic Imaging - What Are X-Rays?</image:title>
<image:caption>Radiographs (x-rays) for pets are just like x-rays for humans. They use small amounts of radiation to create images of a pet’s internal structures, including both soft tissues, organs, and bones. X-rays allow veterinarians to visually evaluate your pet’s internal structures, looking for signs of abnormalities, injuries, and/or disease.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5fd0f4ea12ae897db0091317/1618245331578-MLI0YWV5URUJ3DEK5ZVB/EH1_7693.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Diagnostic Imaging - When Are Radiographs Necessary?</image:title>
<image:caption>Our veterinarians recommend taking x-rays in a variety of circumstances, all of which are characterized by the need to diagnose a problem that cannot be diagnosed with the naked eye or laboratory tests alone. X-rays allow our veterinarians to determine the exact nature or extent of damage caused by an injury. They allow us to locate ingested foreign objects. They also can reveal problems with your pet’s bones, ligaments, cartilage, joints, or organs. As pets age, we also might recommend taking x-rays at regular wellness appointments in order to diagnose any age-related illnesses, such as osteoarthritis, in early stages of development. Early diagnosis and treatment of many age-related diseases often provide pets the best chance of arresting the progression of the disease, preventing pets from suffering severe symptoms.</image:caption>

<image:title>Diagnostic Imaging - Ultrasound Services</image:title>
<image:caption>Our hospital offers ultrasound (sonogram) examinations as a non-invasive diagnostic procedure to evaluate your pet's internal organs. Ultrasound can be used to examine the abdominal organs, reproductive organs, eyes and heart. Ultrasound is non-invasive and well tolerated by most pets. In most cases, ultrasound is relatively brief and your pet is able to go home the very same day.</image:caption>

<image:title>Diagnostic Imaging - What to Expect During Your Pet’s X-Ray Appointment</image:title>
<image:caption>X-rays are quick, safe, and painless procedures for cats and dogs to undergo. Most pets can successfully have x-ray images taken without the need for any level of sedation. Like snapping a picture, your pet just needs to remain still for a few seconds in order to capture clear images. Once x-rays have been taken, our veterinarian will evaluate them and discuss any notable findings with you.</image:caption>

<image:title>Hospice & Euthanasia - Euthanasia & Cremation Services at Carolina Place Animal Hospital</image:title>
<image:caption>Saying goodbye to a long-time friend is painful. We work with clients to ensure their pet's comfort and dignity. The doctors and staff at Carolina Place Animal Hospital are pet owners too. We each deeply love and respect animals and honor the special bond between humans and their furry family members. Our passion is to provide the best veterinary care for your pet and to keep them happy and healthy for many years. We understand that the end of life process can be very difficult, and want to work with you to ensure your pet’s comfort and quality of life for as long as possible. If at any time you contemplate euthanasia, feel confident that we do provide the service to ease this transition for your family. Deciding When It Is Time Deciding when the time is right for humane euthanasia involves considering a multitude of factors. Your veterinarian can help make the process less confusing. Some people seek guidance from animal communicators in determining whether it is time to let go. We recommend referencing a Quality of Life Scale to help inform your decision. Aftercare Options Communal Cremation: Your pet will be cremated and then buried at the pet memorial site garden. Your pet's ashes will not be returned to you. Individual Cremation: Your pet will be cremated individually and the ashes will be returned to you. The ashes should be returned to the animal hospital within a week; you will receive a phone call from our hospital informing you when the urn arrives. At your convenience—and you can take as much time as you need—please come during our office hours to pick up your pet's ashes. We will also prepare your pet for an at home burial upon request.</image:caption>

<image:title>Geriatric Care - We love Senior Pets!</image:title>
<image:caption>Senior pets have special needs, and benefit from more regular veterinary visits compared to their younger counterparts. Age-associated conditions include: Arthritis Dental Disease Heart Disease Liver Disease Kidney Disease Endocrine Disorders These conditions will start to become more prevalent as your pet gets older. For this reason, we recommend twice-yearly veterinary visits for pets over 7 years of age. Your aging pet may be showing early signs of osteoarthritis such as stiffness after rest or play, difficulty going up or down stairs and reduced activity. Early intervention with joint supplements and prescription arthritis medications when indicated, along with modified nutrition and exercise plans, can greatly improve your pet’s comfort and mobility. Likewise, performing annual screening lab work on your older pet can help identify early stages of medical problems that might go unrecognized, and progress significantly without treatment. Getting older doesn’t have to be fraught with troubles for your pet… see your vet regularly to help keep your senior pet healthy and comfortable.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Pets age more quickly than we do, so a year in our life equals 6 to 10 in theirs. The same way our bodies get sick and break down as we age, so do our pets, but much faster. The way to keep your pet healthy for as long as possible is a wellness plan starting with a yearly pet exam with our veterinarian. What is Wellness Care? Every pet has different physical, behavioral, and emotional needs. For every pet wellness exam, we examine your pet from head to toe and everywhere in between. By doing this regularly, we identify changes from the previous exam that might need to be addressed. During each yearly pet exam, our veterinarian establishes a strategy for keeping your pet healthy through the coming year and the long term. What to Expect with your Veterinarian At Carolina Place Animal Hospital, we bring a unique wealth of skill and expertise in caring for pets and keeping them well. During the yearly pet exam, we check your pet for: Weight - Our first stop is the scale. If your pet is over or under-weight, the plan will be to modify diet and activity. Coat, skin and eyes - A dull coat tells us a lot about your pet’s health. We see if the pet’s eyes react properly to light and check to ensure the skin does not have rashes or sores. Ears - Our veterinarian checks deep into the ear canals as well as ear drums and flaps. Ear mites, infections, irritation and tumors are the primary ear issues. Dental - During the dental part of the exam, we check the condition of the teeth, look for swelling, bad odors, and tumors. Looking at the gums we can detect periodontal disease. Nose - Any nasal discharge is something to investigate further. Heart and lungs - Using a stethoscope, our veterinarian listens to the heart for murmurs and lungs for unusual sounds. Physical manipulation and stool sample - We palpitate and feel your pet’s abdomen, anal sacs, legs, and joints. We look for tumors or masses and evaluate range of motion and pain. We take a stool sample to check for parasites. Vaccinations - Vaccinations are a critical piece in the pet wellness exam here at Carolina Place Animal Hospital. They protect pets from otherwise dangerous and life-threatening illness and are necessary to assuring your companion has a long, healthy and happy life. Additional exam services - If during the exam our veterinarian determines there is something to pursue, we may decide to take your pet’s blood or do an x-ray for more input. As pets get older, blood work will become a standard part of the yearly pet exam. The staff here at Carolina Place Animal Hospital is committed to the practice of preventive health care for every pet, for each year of their lives. Let us put your pet on the road to superlative wellness care. Contact us to schedule your pet's yearly pet exam.</image:caption>
